Mindfulness is a practice which brings equanimity and calmness to a person's life. It is a means of reducing stress and its effects on the body and mind. In yoga terms, it is sometimes classified as Dharana or concentration of the mind on a single object. In the classical system of Yoga outlined by the sage Patanjali, Mindfulness is a necessary skill to master in order to have more success with the path of meditation.
Meditation in yoga is called Dhyana. There are so many techniques from the many traditions which can be employed to bring about a state of Meditation. This state can be described as being not separate from the object of meditation, whether it is Mantra, Breath or Being.
